Carbon Steel Pipe Flanges

Forged carbon steel flanges are mechanical connectors used to securely join pumps, valves, pipes, and other equipment. Carbon steel is exceptionally strong and a common choice for applications in demanding industries like oil and gas, petrochemical, and waterworks.

A carbon steel flange is capable of providing a tight, leak-proof seal in high-pressure and corrosive environments, and at the same time offering easy access for inspection, modification, or cleaning of the pipeline system.

With over 100 years of industry experience, Coastal Flange provides a large selection of standard flanges, and we also collaborate with engineers and product managers on custom flanges for specific applications. All of our carbon steel flanges offer top-notch performance, meeting ANSI, ASME, and AWWA regulatory standards to ensure the highest level of quality and reliability. Types of Carbon Steel Pipe Flanges

Coastal Flange offers the following types of carbon steel flanges for use with different pressure ratings, connection methods, and application-specific requirements:

Carbon Steel Blind Flanges

A blind flange carbon steel connector blocks the flow of gases or fluids in a pipeline, either permanently or temporarily. They are often used when disconnecting a pipeline from the rest of the system for repair, maintenance, or other purposes. Coastal Flange offers AWWA carbon steel blind flanges in Class B, D, E, and F ring/hub configurations.

Lap-Joint

Carbon steel lap-joint flanges are used to connect pipes, fittings, or other equipment together. Similar to slip-on flanges, they are designed to slide directly over the pipe to create a tight connection using a stub-end fitting. Since they are not welded to the pipe, lap joint flanges can rotate freely to match bolt holes and are commonly used in shipyard applications that require frequent dismantling.

Slip-On

ANSI-approved carbon steel slip-on flanges are single-piece forgings that slide directly over a pipe and are welded in place. They are a simple, cost-effective design that installs without the need for additional tools. Slip-on flanges form a secure connection that can withstand high temperatures and pressures without bursting or leaking. They are often used in low-pressure applications that do not require dismantling.

Socket Weld

Carbon steel socket-weld flanges are ideal for small-diameter pipes operating within low-temperature or low-pressure systems. The flange is attached by inserting the pipe into the female socket end and applying a fillet weld around the top to create a secure connection that enables the seamless flow of gas or liquid.

Threaded

A carbon steel threaded flange securely connects a device to a pipe without the need for welding. The tapered threads form a leak-free connection between the pipe and flange and accommodate fast and easy access for equipment repair. Coastal Flange offers custom-engineered threaded flanges, which can be modified to meet the exact requirements of a specialty project.

Weld-Neck

Carbon steel weld-neck flanges effectively transfer stress from the flange to the pipes, which minimizes the concentration of stress at the bottom of the flange. Coastal Flange offers ASME-approved B16.47 Series A and B flanges, for excellent performance and reliability for applications in the oil and gas industry.

Material Grades Used for Carbon Steel Flanges

High-yield carbon steel is used extensively for pipeline components due to its exceptional strength and durability. Common carbon steel material grades include:

  • A-105: High-temperature service to a maximum of 1000 ºF.
  • A-305 LF2: Lower temperature applications.
  • A-694 / F42 – F70: High-yield applications.

Common Applications of Carbon Steel Pipe Flanges

  • Oil & Gas: Connects and separates various points in a pipeline, providing easy access for repairs and maintenance; Meets ASME B16.47, ANSI B16.5 requirements.
  • Petrochemical: Blind, slip-on, and weld neck flanges are commonly used for natural gas and crude oil applications; Meets ASME/ANSI B16.5 requirements.
  • Waterworks: For transferring water through distribution pipelines; Meets AWWA C207-18/C228-19 requirements.

Benefits of Carbon Steel Pipe Flanges

Carbon steel flanges are trusted connectors where strength, durability, and serviceability are critical. They offer several benefits:

  • Maintaining a consistent flow of gas or liquids, including petroleum products and hazardous chemicals.
  • Durable, high-strength sealing with leak-free construction.
  • Easy installation.
  • Supporting system integrity over time.
  • Reliable performance in high-temperature environments.
  • Preventing pressure buildup, which lowers the risk of system damage or failure.
  • Excellent shock resistance.
