Since 1986, Coastal Flange has offered a wide range of strong, reliable pipe flanges with some of the fastest turn times in the industry. Due to a recent change in ASME product names to ANSI; however, we wanted to make our customers aware that we’re still offering the same high-quality, industry-compliant flanges as always despite the name change. Read on to learn more about the ASME and ANSI organizations, their applicable flange varieties, and industry-compliant products from Coastal Flange.
ANSI vs. ASME
Previously, we named our products based on their compliance with the international standards and codes under the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). In addition to regulating the mechanical engineering sector, this private organization founded in 1880 is committed to supporting and encouraging collaboration between the multidisciplinary engineering, science, and art communities. As part of this commitment, ASME has contributed to many professional conferences, publications, and courses over the years.
Meanwhile, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is an organization responsible for establishing clear standards for a range of U.S. products, services, processes, and systems. Founded in 1918, its diverse membership consists of academic scholars, businesses and corporations, governmental agencies, and more.
ASME Flanges From Coastal Flange
ASME-certified flanges are applicable for industrial piping systems, enabling users to close, cover, and connect pipes from nominal pipe sizes 26” through 60” depending on pressure class. Available in multiple designs, the following are the most common varieties of ASME flanges:
- Slip-on flanges. These flanges slide over piping to achieve a close fit.
- Weld neck flanges. Weld neck flanges fit the inner diameter (ID) of a pipe and secure to it through welding.
- Blind flanges. This flange design seals vessel openings and pipe ends.
- Lap joint flanges. Pair these flanges with stub end fittings, which allow for simple assembly and disassembly.
- Threaded flanges. These flanges are compatible with threaded pipes, screwing on and eliminating the need for welding.
- Socket-weld flanges. This flange variety fits like sockets on pipes, allowing for optimal inner flow through a top weld.
ANSI Flanges From Coastal Flange
ANSI flanges serve the same functions as ASME flanges, only they comply with ANSI standards instead. ANSI B16.5 flanges range from ½” to 24” nominal pipe size. Like the ASME varieties above, some of the most common types of ANSI class flanges are:
- Slip-on flanges. Available in either hub or ring styles, these flanges slide over pipes to fit their outer diameters (ODs).
- Weld neck flanges. Attached using welding, weld neck flanges match the ID of a pipe.
- Blind flanges. Use blind flanges to seal the openings or ends of vessels or pipes.
- Lap joint flanges. Pair lap joint flanges with stub end fittings to facilitate disassembly.
- Threaded flanges. Remove the need for welding with threaded flanges that secure to the external threads of threaded pipes.
- Socket-weld flanges. A top weld and socket-style fitting allow for maximal internal flow in this flange type.
